In the framework of planning all competition activities for 2021 still within the covid-19 pandemic that troubles the entire world, and taking under consideration the current data in close cooperation with all responsible health and public authorities, SEGAS (the Hellenic Athletics Federation) and the City of Athens are announcing the staging of the 2021 Athens Half Marathon event on May 23rd, 2021. This decision regarding the staging of the Athens Half Marathon event into the last days of May, and not during the third weekend of March as usual, was taking after detailed study of all sanitary parameters and factors that are daily changing, taking under account the already announced competition activities for 2021, and with priority to public health and the health of the event’s participants.

In case the conditions related to covid-19 pandemic in Greece do now allow, even then, the staging of the 2021 Athens Half Marathon on May 23rd, something we surely pray not, the 2021 Athens Half Marathon will definitely be held on September 12th, two months before the steady date of the Authentic Athens Marathon

On the occasion of the 2019 Athens Marathon, the Hellenic Athletics Federation introduced a medal series with unique historic, cultural and artistic value. The first medal of that series, dedicated to the history and evolution of the Marathon movement, was offered to the participants in last year’s Athens Marathon event that was held on November 9th & 10th, 2019.

Following the decision recently made by the Health Committee of the Hellenic Secretariat of Sports that prohibits the staging of running outdoor/off-stage events with more than 100 persons involved (participants and staff), the Hellenic Athletics Federation and the City of Athens, in consultation with the Attica Region, announce that the 2020 Athens Half Marathon, scheduled to take place on September 20th, is now cancelled.

In accordance with the Protocol for Road Races approved by the Health Committee of the General Secretariat of Sports for Sports and the Ministry of Sports, SEGAS (Hellenic Athletics Federation) and its partners have taken up further actions and announce today that, given the current circumstances, the 2020 Athens Marathon will be staged as planned on 07 & 08 November 2020.

The 2020 Athens Marathon event’s program includes the following Races:

Marathon Race – The Athens Marathon Race participants will be divided into two different smaller Marathon races (Marathon Race & Marathon Race B), with 5,000 participants each and one hour difference as to starting time. Allotment of runners in one of these two marathon races and the relevant starting block will be made by the LOC. It is noted that the Athens Marathon Race will be held on Sunday 08 November, while exact starting times will be announced within the next days.


Following the approval of the Protocol for Road Races submitted by the Hellenic Athletics Federation to the Health Committee of the General Secretariat of Sports for Sports and the Ministry of Sports, SEGAS (Hellenic Athletics Federation) and the City of Athens, organizers of the Athens Half Marathon event, announced today the decisions taken regarding the staging of the 2020 Athens Half Marathon.

This approved Protocol is the core document on which SEGAS and the City of Athens have based their final decisions for the staging of the 2020 Athens Half Marathon event on 20 September 2020, after its late postponement in March, in close cooperation with Attica Region authorities.

On that ground, it is said that:

Following the decision on the postponement of the 2020 Athens Half Marathon, that was originally scheduled to take place on 22 March the Organizers announce today that the 2020 ATHENS HALF MARATHON will be held on Sunday 20 September.

Being responsible and prioritizing the Public Health, the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) and the City of Athens have commonly decided to transfer the event in the beginning of autumn, with the belief that this new date will allow everyone the time to recover from the difficult and tough situation we are experiencing, and at the same time, will give the Athens Half Marathon the perspective of a preparation event leading to the “Athens Marathon. The Authentic” in November.

Following the instructions and orders of the Greek State and Government in order to protect the Public Health against COVID-19 by taking measures that will further restrict the corona virus contagion in Greece, the offices of the Hellenic Athletics Federation will remain closed until further notice. Within the framework of the pandemic crisis that the entire world is currently battling with, and the decisions of the Greek Government in order to protect the Public Health against COVID-19 by taking measures that will further restrict the corona virus contagion in Greece, the Organizing Committee of the 2020 Athens Half Marathon, originally scheduled for 22 March 2020, has announced that the event is postponed.

Following up the Hellenic Government’s announcement regarding measures to further restrict the corona virus contagion in Greece, the organizers of the 9th Athens Half Marathon, SEGAS and the Municipality of Athens, would like to announce that the event scheduled to take place in March 22nd 2020, is postponed.
